Created by Andy Hobday & Paul Hicks

New, highly-detailed, 28mm medieval miniatures, terrain and campaign setting called 'Death & Taxes' for The Barons' War tabletop game.

Latest Updates from Our Project:

BW4: Outremer going live today!
almost 2 years ago – Fri, May 13, 2022 at 01:24:27 AM

We are bringing a new setting to The Barons' War, a fresh start for this award-winning game. It's time to move away from the green fields of England and move the action into the desert, where the western Franks encounter a brand new challenge.

By relocating The Barons' War over the sea, we are creating a brand new range of miniatures, with supporting retinue lists compatible with the current rulebook and miniature range.

The Outremer supplement will be a PDF providing background and retinue lists that work in conjunction with The Barons' War rulebook. At the end of a successful campaign, the full-colour PDF booklet will be a FREE reward to say "thank you" to backers for completing their pledges.

Outremer is the second time Paul and I have brought a project to Kickstarter from scratch, the first being when we initially kicked off The Barons' War back in Sept 2019. We are hoping that with your help, we can make this new setting a success too.

The 'Choose your Packs' level enables you to choose your own mix of packs & pledge.

The 'Antagonists' level enables you to back for one of each of the initial 10 figure packs.

 THE FORTIFIED HOSPITAL

A brand new setting needs brand new terrain. As part of this project the Fortified Hospital is offered both physically and digitally. We thought long and hard about the best way to make appropriate terrain available and decided the digital sculpting route was the answer.

We have organised ourselves to be in a position where we can print the files for you offering physical products where a 3D printer isn't readily available. We are limited to 25 Fortified Hospitals, printed using liquid resin and supplied unpainted.

A successful Kickstarter will enable us to increase our printing capacity so we can grow our range of high-quality resin printed terrain and print on demand for you. A successful campaign will also enable our future plans to continue to extend our range filling tabletops with some of the best medieval terrain available - especially for this setting!

 MINIATURES & TERRAIN PLEDGE?

If you want to back for both physical terrain and miniatures choose the terrain pledge Fortified Hospital (physical terrain) and increase the total amount to cover the packs of miniatures.

The Fortified Hospital Digital Files (STLs) can be included as an add-on at any pledge level, just select while pledging.

CAMPAIGN GOAL, STRETCH GOALS & ADD-ONS

We have set a campaign goal of £10,000 which is enough to have production moulds made for the initial release, produce the figures as well as start printing the physical terrain.  We also have Stretch Goals and Add-ons lined up ready to go, more than ever before,  something we learned we needed to do from previous The Barons' War campaigns with the first of these being available at £12,000. These extras will all be figure packs.

BACK IN THE FIRST 24 HOURS

Nigel Wood has kindly offered us his pledge miniature from BW3 to help us with our new campaign.  We've chosen to make the monk figure available to anyone who backs during the first 24 hours as a thank you for getting in there early.

NB: We will NOT be releasing this figure as it belongs to Nigel.

SHIPPING

We'll be collecting shipping costs after a successful campaign and once you have finalised your pledges in the pledge manager. We expect shipping costs to be the same as those currently used by Footsore Miniatures & Games who are handling all our shipping. All EU pledges will be shipped using IOSS.

BW4: Outremer - Going live May 2022!
almost 2 years ago – Tue, May 10, 2022 at 09:12:28 AM

We are bringing a new setting to The Barons' War next month, a fresh start for this award-winning game. It's time to move away from the green fields of England and move the action into the desert, where the western Franks encounter a brand new challenge.

Knights of St. John painted by HVM workbench

We are relocating The Barons' War 'over the sea' by creating a new range of miniatures with supporting retinue lists compatible with the current rulebook and miniature range.

The new miniatures we aim to fund are for two core retinues located in the realms known as the Crusader States. These new packs will add the Holy Orders and Ayyubid Warriors to The Barons' War range.

Ayyubid Archers

The Outremer supplement will be a PDF providing background and retinue lists that work in conjunction with The Barons' War rulebook. At the end of a successful campaign, the full-colour PDF booklet will be a FREE reward to say "thank you" to backers for completing their pledges.

Outremer will be the second time Paul and I have brought a project to Kickstarter from scratch, the first was when we initially kicked off The Barons' War back in Sept 2019. We are hoping that with your help, we can make this new setting a success too.

Knights of St. John (or any Holy Order)

Excited about our new project? The pre-launch page is now live and you can register to be notified of the launch in May 2022. Please help us to share the word by sharing with your friends and gaming buddies.

Wrapping up BW3. What's next?
about 2 years ago – Wed, Feb 02, 2022 at 12:55:16 AM

Hello and happy 2022! We are delighted to say that January 2022 has been quiet regarding the shipping of BW3 pledges into the EU. As we enter February 2022, four months since pledges started shipping, we think it is safe to call the BW3 project ‘done’. Therefore we will be closing out the pledge manager at the end of this week - Friday the 4th February 2022. This action will complete the project.

What shall I do if I have an issue?

If there is an issue with your pledge, we encourage you to contact Footsore Miniatures & Games for any reason. These guys carried out the mammoth task of fulfilling this project for us. Therefore, they are the best people to help you. Contact them via email at [email protected]. Please share as much detail as possible, who you are, BW order number if you have it and how they can help you. All will be helpful information for them. In the unlikely event they can not solve your issue, they are regularly in contact with both Paul and me, so they can call on us for help if needed.

Footsore Miniatures & Games stocking BW3 range

We think it will come as no surprise that Footsore Miniatures & Games have agreed to add the BW3 figures to The Barons' War range on their website.  Footsore are also stocking the Death & Taxes book, both the PDF and the printed version. If you haven't visited their website before it can be found by clicking here, whilst you're there grab yourself some reinforcements.

The Village of Wimentun

If you are waiting for Wimentun, we are currently in discussion to release physical versions of the terrain from the Kickstarter towards the end of February 2022. We are also working towards releasing the STL files onto the Warhost website. Availability should also be during February 2022.

NB: If your pledge included STL files you will have been sent an email back in June 2021 with an account invite to access them.  Check your spam if you believe you haven't recieved this email. If you cannot find it, then contact Andy on [email protected] and he will send it again. Please do this as soon as you can.

What's next, BW4?

Work has tentatively started on BW4 or ‘Outremer’ as it will be called, as we move the location 'over the sea'. Set during the same period will mean current figures will be relevant for the Frankish forces, who we are aiming to supplement with the Holy Orders. Our idea is to bring a new campaign set to Kickstarter focused around a desert fort and add Ayyubid, Mamluk and Seljuk forces (as well as others) to The Barons’ War with rules for retinues based in the Crusader States and close by.

The Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John coming to The Barons' War

The goal is to have a BW4 Kickstarter page available well in advance of go-live so you can arrange to be notified when we launch. Andy will also be posting updates over on his Facebook page, as well as in the very active The Barons' War Facebook group and also on the WARHOST blog as things happen. So if you would like to be kept up to date it's where you will find all the latest news, and sneak peeks!

And finally...

Way back in March 2021, we launched BW3. Thank you for having faith in us to deliver by backing our project. It is appreciated. We hope you will join us ‘over the sea’ for BW4 later in 2022 as we have some incredible ideas!

With the world still experiencing Covid-19 we want to finish up by saying please keep safe!

Merry Christmas Everyone & Thank you!
over 2 years ago – Thu, Dec 23, 2021 at 02:14:09 AM

As 2021 quickly draws to a close, we have a final update for this year, rounding off what has been both an exciting and challenging time for the BW3: Death & Taxes project.

EU & All Other Pledges

We believe that all EU pledges have finally arrived with backers. BW3 ended up paying extra VAT and duty on over a third of all the pledges sent into EU countries, and to be honest, in most cases, we couldn't understand why. However, as promised, we are pleased to say we made these payments with no quibble in exchange for a receipt for our records.

We also believe that by now, all BW3 pledges have finally arrived.  However, if you are still waiting for your package, please don't hesitate to contact Footsore Miniatures & Games using the email address [email protected].  Please provide your name and other details as we will want to resolve this for you as soon as possible.

NB: Just to reiterate Paul and I do not consider the BW3 Kickstarter concluded until everyone who completed their pledge in BackerKit has received it. Please be assured we will be available until this happens.

Wargames Illustrated Awards - Best New Rules 2021

To everyone who voted for The Barons' War in the Wargames Illustrated Awards for the Best New Game of 2021, we are delighted to be able to say it won! When we started down the path of The Barons' War project, little did we realise that it would become award-winning.

We'd like to say a big thank you to George Asling and Mark Farr for their help, support and input into the creation of the rules. Steve Beckett for his fantastic work on the rulebook's design and layout, including his illustrations and diagrams. Peter Dennis for the atmospheric cover art which completed the book. Finally, a big thank you to Footsore Miniatures & Games for agreeing to distribute the range and to all you guys, the Kickstarter backers, as without you, this couldn't have happened.

Conquest - Dark Ages Supplement for The Barons' War

Back in the mists of time, before we released The Barons' War rulebook, the decision was made to remove the Viking, Saxon and Norman faction lists as they no longer worked in the finished book. A year has passed since promising to release the lists as a download, and a lot has happened to morph these three factions into a 92-page full colour Early Medieval supplement (Dark Ages in old money).

The good news is you will be able to download a copy from Footsore Miniatures & Games before Christmas Day, its release will be announced via my (Andy H) Facebook page and in The Barons' War group so keep an eye there to not miss out. I'm sure Footsore will also mention it in their newsletter.

With my Monday night gaming group currently playing Barons' War: Conquest and refusing to play anything else for the foreseeable future, work is happening at a pace to add additional factions, abilities and rules. With the Welsh, Irish, Scots and Islesmen in development, it has made sense for this initial release of Conquest to be digital.

What's Next?

Unsurprisingly, we keep being asked what's next and will there be a BW4?  Well, I am delighted to say Paul, and I do have new plans in the pipeline...

...and we will have further news about this early 2022, so start saving your pennies.

Once again, all that is left for us to say is a huge thank you for your support. Because of this, it has been a fantastic year for The Barons' War. Paul and I would very much like to wish you and your families all the best during this holiday season and all the very best for the New Year.

Please be careful, everyone and stay safe!

Wave 2 Villages, Backers Sculpts, EU Pledges and the Release of BW3
over 2 years ago – Mon, Nov 29, 2021 at 05:33:18 AM

As we approach the end of November, it seems the right time for another update. This time we take a look at the King John pledge personal backer figures, Wave 2 physical villages, BW3 range being released by Footsore Miniatures & Games and EU pledges arriving with backers during November 2021.

KING JOHN PLEDGE FIGURES

These figures are the personal sculpts chosen by the backers who backed the project at the King John level. Each backer sent Paul a brief and, in all cases, had the opportunity to discuss their personal sculpt with him resulting in the following.

Each of these sculpts have now been mastered, with a number of each spun in master metal. These castings will be on their way next week to the respective owners.

WAVE 2 - PHYSICAL VILLAGES

We added an extra 25 village pledges during the campaign due to demand, with the understanding that they would follow on at the end of November 2021. I am pleased to say that they will all be ready on time and with Footsore to ship out this coming week. It would be realistic to assume that they will all be on their way to backers by the 3rd of December 2021, with the furthest geographical destinations being sent first. If you are one of these backers and have forgotten what you will be receiving, Wimentun Village is made up of the following.

Once these villages have shipped, the plan is to make the digital files available for purchase during December 2021 with physical versions as products from January 2022. We will have more information about this closer to launch but you can take a sneaky peak here.

EU PLEDGES ARRIVING DURING NOVEMBER

We can confirm that the EU pledges have been arriving throughout November (2021) as so far, we have paid extra Duty & VAT charges for 27 backers who had issues with customs. We have made these payments with no quibble in exchange for a receipt for our records.

With the number of requests for our help dying down over the last week, we are beginning to think it is likely that most, if not all, pledges have arrived. If you haven’t yet received your pledge, could you please comment below so we know how many backers are still waiting for theirs to arrive?

I want to take this opportunity to reiterate that Paul and I believe Footsore has sent out all pledges to backers. We do not consider this Kickstarter concluded until everyone who completed their pledge in BackerKit has received it. Please be assured we will be available until this happens.

THE BW3 RANGE TO BE RELEASED BY FOOTSORE MINIATURES

The Barons' War at Footsore Miniatures & Games

As part of our arrangement with Footsore Miniatures & Games to carry out the manufacturing and fulfilment of this Kickstarter, they can release the BW3 range on their website under license. Their plan is for the range to be available mid to late December 2021 and include the Death & Taxes book.

 THE 2021 WARGAMES ILLUSTRATED AWARDS

Closing Tuesday 30th of November 2021, Wargames Illustrated are asking for your votes for the 2021 Wargames Illustrated Awards! If you like what we are creating with The Barons’ War please take the time to vote for us, it doesn't take long, and we’d really appreciate it. To be honest we’d also appreciate a vote if you've not planned in taking the survey, too.

The Barons' War needs further recognition. You can find the survey by clicking here or by using this link https://s.surveyplanet.com/o200lri6.

A vote in the ‘Q6 Best New Rules/Game’ category and the ‘Q3 Best Range of Figures’ would be most welcome.

As always, if you have any questions about the BW3 campaign please get in touch. Most importantly keep safe everyone!
